Frequently Asked Questions

About Iris Photography

Iris Photography is a form of macro photography that captures the patterns and colors of the iris, or the colored part of the eye, using specialized equipment. The result is a high-resolution portrait that is completely unique to each individual.

Although many people are discovering iris photography for the first time, the art form was popularized in the 1980s by Francis Giacobetti (1939-2025) through his Vision project, which photographed the eyes of influential individuals such as the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, and Stephen Hawking.

Every iris has more than 240 unique features, making it far more distinctive (and colorful) than a fingerprint. Because of this, each iris portrait becomes a personalized piece of art and a meaningful keepsake that celebrates individuality and connection in a way everyday photos can’t.

Yes — iris photography uses professional and intentional lighting, as well as, macro lenses designed to capture detail without harming your eyes. The process is non-invasive and safe. With this said, if you have pre-existing eye conditions such as a recent eye surgery, retinal issues, photosensitivity, or severe light sensitivity, please consult your eye care provider before your session and let your photographer know.

No — Standard artistic iris photography uses visible-light and does not produce the same data used by biometric security systems, which rely on specialized infrared scans and live eye detection. Because of this, capturing and posting iris photos online does not meaningfully increase biometric security risk.

Booking & Session Details

Yes — sessions are by appointment only at our studio in Mesa, Arizona. Walk-ins or drop-ins are not available. However, if you’re unable to find a time that works for you or other unique situation, please reach out via the website or call/text 480-457-9696, we are happy to work with you.

Our studio is at 86 W University Dr, Mesa, AZ 85201, Suite #111.

  • 1–2 irises: ~30 minutes
  • 3–5 irises: ~60 minutes

When you arrive, we’ll begin with a short overview of iris photography. You’ll then be oriented to our studio space, including works from the original artist, iris viewing, custom iris designs, and print products available for shipping. We’ll then ask you to complete a brief session form before guiding you step-by-step through the process of capturing your iris photograph. At the end of your appointment, we’re happy to answer any final questions you have and confirm your order. You’ll finalize payment and we’ll share contact details if you need to follow up.

To respect everyone’s time, appointments will be canceled if you arrive more than 15 minutes late. If you can no longer attend, please cancel in advance so we can offer the spot to another client.

We accept Venmo, Zelle, and credit/debit cards at the studio.

Preparation & Participation

No special preparation is required.

If you’d like, you can gently practice opening your eyes in a way that shows the full iris using a mirror—but this is completely optional. If that’s not comfortable or easy, no problem at all. We’ll guide you with simple tips in the studio to ensure the best possible capture.

For optimal image quality—especially for brown irises—we recommend avoiding contact lenses, as they can reflect light and affect clarity. If you normally wear contacts, arriving in glasses is ideal.

We also suggest minimal eye makeup and avoiding eyelash extensions, when possible, as they can cast shadows or obscure iris details.

There’s no strict minimum age requirement, but for a successful iris portrait we generally recommend children be around 5 years or older — this is because the session requires a bit of stillness, focus, and the ability to follow simple directions.

Delivery & Use

Digital copies of your edited iris photographs are delivered within 3 days of your session, ready for download and print.

Once you receive your high-resolution digital iris image, there are many creative ways to use it. Aside from wall art, clients have transformed their images into custom products like phone cases, jewelry, personal journals, keepsakes, and other custom products available through marketplaces like Etsy.

These requests can all be done following your visit to the studio and do not require that you make another appointment — you can request new designs, add additional irises to an existing artwork, or order prints after your session. Just email your request to sol@irisphotographyaz.com, and we’ll take care of the rest.

Green eyes are an optical illusion caused by Rayleigh scattering, not a green pigment. They result from low levels of brown melanin and a yellowish pigment called lipochrome, combined with the scattering of light that creates a blue hue. Additionally, when the iris is isolated and placed on a black background, the context that helps us judge color is gone, changing our perception. At Sol Iris Photography, our aim is to keep the colors of the iris as authentic as possible.
